Greens Do Good offers adults with autism hands-on job training and purposeful work experience.

It’s human nature: The daily structure and personal fulfillment of a job well done is an integral part of life—one that is just as essential for individuals with autism as it is for any other adult. Yet, nearly half of 25-year-olds with autism have never held a paying job. Greens Do Good is doing its part to help change that.

Walk into Greens Do Good, a hydroponic, vertical farm in Hackensack, New Jersey, and among the stacked trays of basil, microgreens, and lettuce, you’ll see adults with autism hard at work.

GREENS YOU CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT

The Green Greens Do Good farming method allows for soil-free, four-season growing across a smaller footprint than most traditional farms, using less water and energy and minimizing the impact to the environment. At the farm, REED Next workers spend their days planting, seeding, watering, and assisting with harvesting. Here, they can take on responsibilities that suit their inclination and ability—working at a pace that is tailored to their needs so they can do it successfully and independently.

Greens Do Good is not only transforming the way our local community sources healthy produce,  it’s also changing the future for these individuals with autism. The REED Next workers’ diverse training helps them gain valuable skills, confidence, and the opportunity to work alongside their peers.

Each day brings a new crop of basil, baby kale, butterhead lettuce, and over 20 varieties of microgreens—hand-picked and packed at the height of freshness by the dedicated staff and REED Next team, then sold to local restaurants, country clubs, supermarkets, food service providers, and through home delivery. Greens Do Good has one overarching goal: To serve the community at large in so many different ways. “When we grow our greens, we in turn grow opportunities for adults with autism,” says Chantelle Walker, CEO, REED Next.
